Fort Worden was constructed at the beginning of the 1900's; the whole purpose of Fort Worden was to guard against an invasion from any future enemy of the United States. The gun batteries are the heart and purpose of the fort. And with modern weaponry and airpower, they were outmoded almost from the day they were built. Gun batteries, or "bunkers", fill the hillside above the main fort ground. Fort Worden State Park and Conference Center is now a 434-acre multi-use park with over two miles of saltwater shoreline and a wide variety of services and facilities. The park rests on a high bluff overlooking Puget Sound. Many historic buildings remain at this 19th century military fort.
